Ducati TT1 for Sale - A Rare Piece of Ducati Racing History

Ducati TT1 for Sale - A Rare Piece of Ducati Racing History

At Salt Creek Motorcycles we specialise in rare, collectible and vintage motorcycles, and few machines capture the spirit of Ducati racing quite like the legendary Ducati TT1.

Built during one of the most exciting periods in Ducati’s racing history, the TT1 represents the final evolution of Ducati’s belt-drive racing twins designed by legendary engineer Fabio Taglioni. The bike followed the success of earlier TT racers developed alongside racing specialists NCR, founded by Giorgio Nepoti and Rino Caracchi.

During the early 1980s these Ducati TT machines dominated production-based racing across Europe and the United States. They were particularly successful in endurance racing, Italian championships and the hugely popular Battle of the Twins series, cementing Ducati’s reputation for lightweight, high-performance V-twin race bikes.

The Evolution of the Ducati TT1

The Ducati TT1 evolved from the incredibly successful TT2 platform and stepped into the 750cc Formula 1 racing class. It became the final pure racing motorcycle designed by Taglioni before Ducati transitioned toward the production-based F1 racers that would later influence the company’s superbike lineage.

Power came from a 748cc air-cooled desmodromic L-twin, derived from the Pantah engine family. With race tuning, large carburettors and lightweight construction, TT1 race bikes produced around 80–90 horsepower while weighing approximately 136 kg, giving them an outstanding power-to-weight ratio for the era.

A Rare Ducati Race Bike

The TT1 currently offered through Salt Creek Motorcycles is a particularly fascinating machine.

Built by PGM Racing in 1985, it carries an “01” frame number, suggesting it may use the first thin-wall large-diameter frame produced by renowned Bologna frame builders DM Telai. This frame design improved the already razor-sharp handling characteristics that made the TT series so successful on track.

As expected of a genuine period race bike, it features a correct Ducati race-prepared TT1 engine stamped with the 650-3 engine number, along with a remarkable collection of high-spec components from the era.

Highlights include:

  • Marvic 3-spoke magnesium wheels

  • Marzocchi FI endurance (quick-change) forks

  • Brembo radial front brake system with GP1 calipers

  • Brembo Goldline rear caliper

  • 750 F1 triple clamps

  • Rare Brembo floating brake discs

  • Titanium NCR-style exhaust

  • Malossi 42mm carburettors

  • Extremely rare GPM dry clutch

Prepared by a Legendary Ducati Tuner

This remarkable Ducati race bike was later prepared by respected Milanese Ducati tuner Mario Rognoni. Known throughout Italy for his expertise in tuning Ducati engines, Rognoni prepared this bike for a parade lap at the legendary Isle of Man TT.

The bike still carries many of his personalised stampings and insignia across various handmade components and the fairing, further adding to its historical significance.
